Service Overview

PRP therapy is a non-surgical treatment option that uses the patient’s own blood to stimulate hair growth. The patient’s blood is drawn and then centrifuged to extract platelet-rich plasma, which is injected into the scalp. PRP therapy is believed to promote hair growth by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles and promoting the growth of new hair cells. The treatment is typically done in multiple sessions and can cause some side effects, such as swelling, redness, and discomfort.

PRP Q & A

What is PRP?

PRP injection therapy is a method of treatment that uses the patient’s own blood components to accelerate hair growth.  These injections are prepared by collecting blood samples from the patient, which are then ran through a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the platelets and plasma. The concentrated plasma is injected directly into the scalp to take advantage of growth factors and stimulate hair regeneration.

How many times do you need PRP?

Patients will generally need 3 – 6 treatments every 4 – 6 weeks. Follow-up or maintenance treatments may be necessary every 4 – 6 months for optimal results.

What is success rate of PRP?

While there is no consensus on the exact success rate of PRP injections for hair restoration, it sits between 70-90% for the average patient. It tends to work better in younger patients beginning to experience the effects of genetic hair loss and thinning.

Does PRP for hair loss work for everyone?

The results of PRP will vary from individual to individual, and PRP does not work for everyone. Typically, patients still need to continue their medical therapy to maximize their results. It is important to understand that hair growth will take time.  PRP may not be safe for patients with the following:

  • Patients currently taking any blood-thinning medication.
  • Patients with blood disorders that can cause low platelet count, platelet-poor plasma, or problems with clotting and wound healing.

What are the most common side effects of PRP?

Serious adverse effects from PRP treatment for hair regrowth are rare. However, some of these side effects are:

  • pain and bleeding at the injection site
  • allergic reactions from other products
  • infection during the healing process
  • scarring, dizziness and nausea
